What PEN Doesn't Understand About Free Expression
Dear Friends,
In 2015, in response to the Charlie Hebdo massacre, I joined PEN, the legendary writers organization that counts Dorothy Thompson, Norman Mailer, and Salman Rushdie as past presidents. After the brutal murder of 11 journalists, it seemed like the obligatory thing to do.
11 years later, I’ve had to quit PEN, for reasons I discuss in a New York Times essay published today.
Thanks for reading.
Best,
Jamie
